Beyond the Vale: A North Saga

Beyond the Vale is Claire Greensit’s post-war historical family saga, set in the fictional Yorkshire mining village of Cragside Vale in 1955.

Arthur and Violet North have built their lives around family, work and community. Their children are growing, making choices and beginning to imagine futures of their own. As the possibility of assisted migration to Australia opens a route beyond the familiar streets of Cragside Vale, one family must face what opportunity, loyalty and belonging really mean.

From pit shifts and family meals to schooldays, courtship and the promise of a new life on the other side of the world, the novel follows the people who leave, the people who stay, and the way one decision can alter the course of an entire family.

Welcome to Cragside Vale

Cragside Vale is fictional, but its world is grounded in the social history of post-war northern Britain: terraced homes, the colliery, the Welfare, St Michael’s Church, the school, the shops and The Nag’s Head. History is not happening somewhere beyond the North family. It is in their kitchen, their street, their work and in the choices available to them.

Meet the Norths

At the centre of the story are Arthur and Violet North and their children Jack, Danny, Pip and Stevie. They are a family with deep roots in their community, but each generation sees the future differently. For some, leaving offers possibility. For others, it threatens everything that makes a place home.
